Schweinfurt Again, by
Keith Ferris
Keith Ferris' Schweinfurt Again never fails to get attention at the
Royal Air Force Museum in London, England, where it is displayed as
part of the joint American Society of Aviation Artists/British Guild
of Aviation Artists Exhibition. The exhibition honors the brave young
Americans who fought and gave their lives in the air war of World War
II. "I wanted to honor the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and men
who flew that aircraft," says Ferris. "They faced constant
danger over targets like Schweinfurt, which had claimed 163 bombers on
missions previous to the one pictured here."
Thankfully, neither men nor aircraft of the 303rd Bomb Group were
lost on this October 9, 1944, mission. In fact, the foreground B-17
named Thunder Bird, pictured here on her 80th mission, would go on to
complete 116 missions before her 1945 retirement.
