"Flameout!" by Mike Machat

On May 3 1967 two Republic F-IOSD Thunderchiefs returning from an air strike on Hanoi search in vain for a downed comrade. Low on fuel, they turn toward home and climb for attitude hoping to make contact with a nearby tanker Cruising at minimum power and with no response to their emergency transmissions, their now perilous fuel state may force them to eject over enemy territory Finally contacted on a USAF KC-135, they see the tanker just as the wingman's fuel is exhausted Flight leader Col lack Broughton looks on as his wingman glides to the diving tanker In an amazing feat of airmanship, both 105's refueled and were saved to fight another day Col. Broughton is the auther of "Thud Ridge" and "Going Downtown", the definitive stories of F-105's in the airwar over Vietnam.
