Duxford
Scramble, by
Mark Postlethwaite
During the Battle of Britain, Douglas Bader with the
support of his 12 Group commander Leigh-Mallory evolved
the Big Wing Theory. This involved intercepting the enemy
with anything up to five squadrons at a time, as opposed
to the interceptions carried out by 11 group who were in
the thick the fighting, and who had to meet the enemy
with whatever they could get airborne in time. Seen here
is Douglas Bader leading the Hurricanes of the 242 and
310 Squadrons as they scramble from Duxford to meet up
with the Spitfires of 19 Squadron out of nearby Fowlmere
to form the Duxford Wing
Personally autographed by three (3)
