Portrait of the Queen,
by
Stan Stokes
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is the
subject of Stan’s painting. B-17s were produced in large numbers and
along with the B-24 Liberator carried out the brunt of the Eighth
Air Force’s long range strategic daylight bombing campaign. These
missions were very dangerous, especially early in the War when long
range fighter escort was unavailable. The sacrifice made by these
bomber crews hastened the end of the War.
